ATLANTA -- The Georgia Association of Educators’ (GAE) Board of Directors has voted unanimously to endorse former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams for election to the office of governor of the state of Georgia. The GAE Board concurred with the recommendation of GAE’s Fund for Public Education Committee that believed Abrams history as a staunch supporter of public education is a solid indicator of what she will continue to do as governor to help transform Georgia’s public education system into a shining example for the nation and the world.
During her tenure as minority leader, Abrams helped lead the effort to prevent numerous legislative efforts that would have proven extremely harmful for our k-12 students. This included helping to bring together a broad-based coalition of community, educators, parents, church, and business interests to defeat 2016’s school takeover legislation, Amendment One. Subsequently, she continues to build a partnership with the same coalition to use her influences to put in place more commonsense legislation to help our under-performing schools through the passage of the recent First Priority Act.
“It is thoughtful, researched and measured approaches to tackling our public education challenges that led our GAE Board of Directors to determine that Abrams is the choice to move our public education system, and our state, forward in this new global age,” said GAE President Dr. Sid Chapman. “Her commitments to policies that help ensure student success and support for educators is unmatched among the gubernatorial candidates.”
GAE is in full agreement with Abrams’ vision of “Building a Georgia where every child believes their future should be limitless.” Chapman says that is the goal of every teacher for their students. “Teachers want to see their students flourish at what they choose to do in life. GAE believes we need a leader in the governor’s office that truly understands that vision and does not just give lip service for political gain. Our children do not deserve lip service. Our children deserve someone who will fight in the trenches for their interests, and for the interests of those that teach and support them and our public schools everyday – the classroom practitioners and support professionals.”
For GAE that person is Stacey Abrams -- for Governor of Georgia.
