For Immediate Release February 23, 2018
Please attribute the following statement to Dr. Sid Chapman, President, Georgia Association of Educators.
The Georgia Association of Educators feel s that overall the Georgia Lottery has lived up its initial promise of helping fund our pre-k system, which is recognized as one of the best the nation, and providing financial support in the form of scholarships and grants, to our students seeking to move on to college at our Georgia universities.
The challenge continues to be funding to the proper levels each year. According to the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, the outlook for 2018 is somewhat deficient in its funding levels. See its report at: https://gbpi.org/2017/overview-2018-fiscal-year-budget-lottery-funded-programs/.
The other key, as with any pot of money, is to have competent stewardship at the helm and to continually monitor the funds to ensure they are being used for the intended purpose and not being siphoned off for other unrelated projects and purposes.
