ATLANTA — Delegates to the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) Representative Assembly held in April elected veteran social studies/history educator and association leader Wayne Huston (pronounced like Houston, TX) from Douglas County as president of the organization.

A Georgia native, Huston brings nearly three decades of experience in public education and educator advocacy to the organization’s top leadership role. “I firmly believe educators thrive in environments where they are supported, respected, and empowered to succeed. As president of GAE, I will continue advocating for educators, strengthening public education, and ensuring every student in Georgia has access to the opportunities they deserve.”

As he prepares to take office, Huston said he plans to focus on action-driven leadership and strengthening support for educators statewide.

Huston often references a quote from futurist Joel A. Barker: “Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision just passes time. Vision with action can change the world.”

After earning a degree in middle grades education from Georgia Southern University in 1997, he has served students, mentored educators and advocated for public education.

As president of the Douglas County Association of Educators, Huston focused on transparency, integrity, collaboration, and inclusivity while working to strengthen educator voices and build unity among members. This included advocating for policies benefiting educators, students, and public schools in Douglas County.

Huston, along with GAE’s newly elected Vice President Wendy Morgan of the Catoosa County Education Association and Secretary-Treasurer Latyshia Preston of the Burke County Association of Educators, was sworn into office by newly elected NEA President Princess Moss on July 7 in Denver during NEA’s 2026 Representative Assembly. They will serve two-year terms and are eligible to seek two additional two-year terms.

Huston lives in Villa Rica, Georgia, with his dog, Jack.

He enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies, listening to music, visiting museums, gardening and being outdoors.
