2025 GEORGIA LEGISLATIVE SESSION PREVIEW
The legislative session kicks off Monday, January 13, 2025.
Hopes of seismic change at the Gold Dome were dashed by an economy that severely hurt Democrats’ chances to increase their representation, especially in the Georgia House of Representatives.
In the end, Democrats added just two seats in the House and none in the state Senate.
Come January, legislators will begin the first of a two-year session. No bills from 2024 carry over into the new year.
Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has already announced plans for legislation to prevent transgendered children from participating on the sports teams that align with their gender identity, both at the high school and college levels.
With a new session, new retirement bills relating to educators are certain to be introduced. Bills that fiscally impact the Georgia Teachers Retirement System (TRS) and the Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS) must be introduced in the first year of the two-year session before passage in the second.
GAE will continue to aggressively defend the Teachers Retirement System from those who wish to turn it into a 401(k). Also at the top of GAE’s legislative agenda with be continued improvements to the PSERS, which serves our schools’ school bus drivers, custodians, food service workers, and maintenance personnel.
GAE will continue to advocate for compensation for aspiring educators during their student teaching experience.
And as ever, there will fights to improve funding for our schools and kids.
